Haiti and Venezuela opposition rallies demand credible elections amid political unrest

In Haiti, the Opposition Progressiste coalition staged a protest outside the Organization of American States (OAS) office in Pétion‑Ville on 28 July, calling for a bicameral executive and an environment of security and stability before any elections can be held. The protesters criticised the current prime minister Alix Didier Fils‑Aime and accused regional and UN partners of political interference.

In Venezuela, pro‑government supporters and opposition activists took to the streets on 1 August ahead of a U.S.-supervised political dialogue. Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who was not invited to the talks, urged voters to demand immediate elections, saying, “If we want a transition, we must go to an election.” The protests highlighted deep divisions over the legitimacy of the interim president Delcy Rodríguez and the contested 2024 presidential results.
