Haiti displacement nears 1.5 million as US completes Iraq withdrawal

Internal displacement in Haiti has reached approximately 1.49 million people, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM). This represents a 2% increase from previous measurements. While Puerto Príncipe maintains a high concentration of displaced persons, the majority of the population is now located in the provinces.

The Artibonite department has seen the most significant growth in displacement, driven by deteriorating security and armed violence. Recent reports indicate that hundreds of people were displaced in the communes of Saint-Marc, Verrettes, and Petite Rivière de l’Artibonite due to armed conflict, with most finding refuge with host families.

In Iraq, the United States and its international coalition have concluded their military presence following the withdrawal of the final troops and equipment from the Erbil air base. This marks the end of a military presence that began with the 2003 invasion. The Pentagon stated that security responsibilities now rest with the Iraqi Armed Forces, though the U.S. will maintain a bilateral cooperation framework involving intelligence support and specialized training.
