Haiti electoral process faces indefinite postponement and delays

Haiti's Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) has indefinitely postponed the start of the electoral campaign and reorganized the electoral calendar. This decision follows modifications to the Electoral Decree approved by the Council of Ministers on October 5. As a result, the deadline for online candidate registration and the submission of required documents has been extended to October 31, 2026.

The postponement occurs amid a severe national crisis characterized by political instability and widespread gang violence. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), approximately 1.5 million people in Haiti have been displaced due to insecurity. The UN has also noted significant casualties, with reports indicating thousands of deaths or injuries since the start of the year.

While the first round of presidential and legislative elections was originally scheduled for December 13, 2026, the CEP has not yet provided a new date for the polls. An updated electoral calendar is expected to be published soon, following consultations with political stakeholders and consideration of technical and operational requirements.
