Haiti faces electoral uncertainty amid gang violence and instability

Haiti faces significant challenges in its attempt to restore democratic processes after a decade without general elections. The Provisional Electoral Council has set a tentative date for the first round of presidential elections for December 13, with a potential second round on February 21, 2027. However, the council suspended the start of the campaign on October 7 due to logistical and security concerns.

The country remains gripped by extreme instability, with armed gangs controlling more than 80% of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and key sectors of the Central, Artibonite, and West departments. This violence affects over 55% of the population.

In response to the electoral uncertainty and ongoing insecurity, the Collectif Kenbe Kapò w has called for national consensus and dialogue. The group has raised concerns regarding the neutrality of Alix Didier Fils-Aimé’s government and the independence of the Provisional Electoral Council. They are demanding a new government team by the end of the year to restore security and ensure credible elections, while also advocating for a reduction in the number of ministries to limit non-priority public spending.
