Haiti gang attack in Artibonite leaves at least 11 dead

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Amnesty International have condemned a violent gang attack in Gros-Morne, located in Haiti’s Artibonite department. The attack, reportedly carried out by the Kokorat San Ras gang, left at least 11 people dead and several others injured. Reports suggest the violence occurred as a retaliation following an operation by the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) against gang positions in the area.

The incident highlights the escalating insecurity in Haiti as violence spreads beyond Port-au-Prince. UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric noted that more than 3,000 people were killed in the country between January and June. He also emphasized that the humanitarian response plan, which requires $880 million to assist 4.2 million people, remains less than half-funded.

In response to the ongoing instability, the UN Security Council recently adopted Resolution 2829, extending the mandate of the GSF for six months until March 31, 2027. Amnesty International’s Americas Director, Ana Piquer, stated that international commitments must be translated into effective protection for the population, urging Haitian authorities to investigate the killings and bring those responsible to justice.
