Haiti gang massacre in Kenscoff leaves 47 dead
Armed gangs carried out a massacre in Kenscoff, south of Port-au-Prince, leaving at least 47 people dead, dozens of hostages, and more than 2,600 people displaced, according to international organizations.
The attack occurred between the night of August 23 and the early hours of August 24. In response, Haiti's Minister of Justice and Public Security, Patrick Pélissier, convened an emergency meeting with the Director General of the Haitian National Police, the Minister of Defense, and the commander of the Gang Suppression Force to discuss restoring order.
The incident has drawn intense criticism of Haiti's security forces. Pierre Espérance, executive director of the National Human Rights Defense Network (Rnddh), stated that no law enforcement armored vehicles were present in Kenscoff during the attack. He noted that the only police armored vehicle in the area had been removed approximately one week prior. Espérance further claimed that authorities had received advance warnings of the violence through gang threats posted on social media.
