Haiti grapples with election risks and diaspora fears as US TPS ends

The Table of the National Rise (TRN) issued a 34‑page position paper warning that Haiti’s 2026 elections risk severe contestation. It cites an incomplete legal framework, persistent insecurity, mass population movements and institutional uncertainty, and urges an immediate halt to party validation and candidate registration until a unified electoral text is adopted. The TRN also recommends an electoral operability index to assess voting capacity in municipalities.

At the same time, Haitians in Haiti and the United States fear the pending termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian migrants. Community members warn that a mass return could overwhelm Haiti’s fragile economy and security, while many families rely on diaspora remittances. No official Haitian government plan has been announced to address a potential influx.
