Haiti imposes new traffic bans in Cap-Haïtien and arrests TikTok influencer in Pétion-Ville

The mayor of Cap‑Haïtien announced that from 13 July 2026 all vehicles without licence plates will be prohibited, and drivers lacking licences, identification or displaying inappropriate behaviour will be detained. Vehicles that are dirty or lack doors or windows will also be banned, with confiscation possible for violators. The municipality also mandated waste‑generator businesses to register for a monthly‑funded collection service and launched a street‑beautification program offering free paint to homeowners who must repaint facades, otherwise facing prosecution.

In Pétion‑Ville, the Haitian National Police detained a TikTok influencer known as “Big Boss” on 11 July 2026 after a gang leader accused him of helping plan attacks on strategic routes in the capital and supporting kidnappings. Police will interview the influencer to verify the claims, highlighting concerns over criminal groups’ use of social media. Security forces remain on alert in nearby Kenscoff amid ongoing tensions.
