Haiti increases fuel and transportation prices

The Haitian government has implemented an increase in fuel prices following rising costs in the international petroleum market. Minister of Social Affairs and Labor Marc-Elie Nelson announced new rates, noting that the decision is a response to global market tensions, particularly in the Middle East.

As part of the adjustment, public transportation costs have been updated. Gasoline is set at 700 gourdes (approximately 5.35 USD) and diesel at 770 gourdes (approximately 5.89 USD). Secretary of State for Communication Lucien Jura stated that the policy aims to adapt to global market changes to preempt more severe economic crises.

The Council of Consumer Protection (Ccsmp) has recommended this increase, marking the fourth time this year. Experts noted a significant discrepancy between current gas station prices and the actual calculated market rates. While a full immediate correction was considered, the Ccsmp is advocating for a gradual increase to mitigate the impact on consumers, as rising fuel costs affect agriculture, commerce, food prices, and access to essential services.
