Haiti issues weather alerts for flooding and landslides
The Haitian Directorate General for Civil Protection (DGPC) has issued orange alerts for the West, Grand'Anse, Nippes, South, and South-East departments due to risks of flooding, landslides, and dangerous maritime conditions. These warnings follow persistent heavy rainfall caused by low-pressure systems in the Caribbean Sea.
The North-West and Artibonite departments have been placed under yellow alerts. In Port-de-Paix, the Hydrometeorological Unit of Haiti (UHM) warned of potential rainfall accumulations between 100 and 150 mm, accompanied by wind gusts of 40 to 60 km/h.
Authorities are urging residents in vulnerable areas—particularly those near ravines, rivers, unstable slopes, and coastlines—to monitor weather bulletins and prepare for possible evacuation to safer shelters. The DGPC has advised the public to secure loose objects and for boat owners to protect their vessels from deteriorating sea conditions.
