Haiti launches HIMO employment and sanitation program

The Haitian government has launched a labor-intensive public works (HIMO) program in Pétion-Ville to provide temporary employment and improve public sanitation. The initiative is a joint effort between the Ministry of Planning and External Cooperation (MPCE) and the Ministry of the Environment, implemented through the National Solid Waste Management Service (SNGRS).

Funded by the 2025-2026 rectifying budget, the pilot project aims to support between 1,000 and 2,000 families, specifically targeting parents and youth. The timing is intended to provide households with much-needed income ahead of the September 7 school reopening to help cover educational expenses and professional training costs.

Authorities will evaluate the results of this initial phase to determine if the program should be renewed in the 2026-2027 budget or integrated into a more permanent public policy. Initial sanitation operations have commenced in Delmas and Pétion-Ville.
