Haiti Minister advocates for resilient agricultural systems

Haitian Minister of Agriculture Marcelin Aubourg has called for long-term investments to build a more productive and sustainable agricultural sector. Speaking at a regional dialogue organized by the Inter-American Development Bank in Panama, Aubourg emphasized the need to address food vulnerability by bolstering domestic production capacity and reducing reliance on imports.

To combat challenges such as climate change, insecurity, and resource degradation, the Minister proposed several strategic priorities. These include improving access to quality seeds, modern equipment, and advisory services, as well as rehabilitating irrigation infrastructure and improving water resource management.

Additionally, the Minister highlighted the importance of modernizing farms, implementing crop diversification, and strengthening early-warning systems to mitigate disaster impacts. To safeguard producer incomes and consumer access, Aubourg also stressed the need to reduce post-harvest losses through better storage, processing, and transport capacities. He urged technical and financial partners to align their support with national priorities to ensure lasting institutional capacity and project coordination.
