Haiti political developments and diplomatic appointments
In Haiti, the political platform REKONSILYE has officially endorsed Gary Bodeau, the former President of the Chamber of Deputies, as its candidate for the upcoming presidential election. Following an internal vote, Bodeau received six votes in favor, two against, and two abstentions. While the platform includes ten organizations, two—KONADESH and the Parti Agricole Haïtien (PAH)—expressed opposition to his candidacy. Bodeau has already registered his candidacy on the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) platform, though final eligibility remains subject to electoral formalities.
In diplomatic news, the White House has formally submitted the nomination of Austin Holmes to the U.S. Senate to serve as the Ambassador to Haiti. Holmes, a Floridian with extensive field experience in humanitarian aid and security in Haiti dating back to before the 2010 earthquake, is viewed as a non-career diplomat with deep operational knowledge of the country.
Additionally, the United States has granted accreditation to Aurélien Lechevallier, the new French Ambassador to Washington. This approval ends a period of diplomatic tension that began in July following comments made by the French mission in Geneva regarding U.S. human rights records.
