Haiti receives $75 million UN aid package amid ongoing crisis
The United Nations has allocated US$75 million through the Haiti Humanitarian Fund (HHF) to address the escalating crisis in Haiti. Managed by the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), this funding will support ten projects across 28 priority communes in the Ouest, Centre, and Artibonite departments. The aid is intended to reach approximately 507,000 people, providing essential services such as food, clean water, healthcare, emergency shelter, and protection for women and children at risk of exploitation.
A portion of the funds, including US$4.5 million for a rapid response mechanism, will be directed to Haitian national and local NGOs. These organizations often operate on the front lines in areas where armed gang violence restricts international access. One notable consortium is led by a coalition of women to ensure assistance addresses gender-specific risks.
In a separate but related development, the UN Security Council has renewed sanctions against Haiti for one year. These measures include asset freezes, travel bans, and an arms embargo aimed at curbing gang violence and restoring security. The resolution, supported by the United States and Panama, also extended the mandate of the Expert Group overseeing these sanctions for thirteen months.
