Haiti receives first U.S. deportation flight following end of TPS
The United States has completed its first deportation flight to Haiti since the Trump administration successfully challenged the renewal of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) in court. An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) flight carrying approximately 161 passengers landed at Cap-Haitien Airport on Thursday, having departed from Alexandria, Louisiana.
The flight landed in the northern city of Cap-Haitien because the primary international airport in Port-au-Prince is currently considered too dangerous for commercial and government flights due to widespread gang violence. The deportees, who included TPS holders and individuals who had served prison sentences, arrived wearing white and many obscured their faces to avoid detection by criminal groups.
Jean Négot Bonheur Delva, director general of Haiti’s National Office of Migration, stated that the Haitian government did not request these repatriations but is tasked with assisting the returnees. Delva noted that some individuals in the group were born in other countries, such as Chile or the Dominican Republic, but were returned due to their Haitian parentage. The returnees face significant risks traveling to other parts of the country, as gangs control major transit routes and frequently engage in violence against travelers.
