Ecuador and Haiti advance electoral processes with candidate lists and new leadership
In Ecuador, the National Electoral Council (CNE) has released the final list of 65 candidates for the Council for Citizen Participation and Social Control (CPCCS). The candidates will compete in elections scheduled for November 29, 2026, to serve for the 2027-2031 term. The selection process is divided into three categories: three representatives from a list of women (26 candidates), three from a list of men (38 candidates), and one representative for indigenous, Afro-Ecuadorian, Montubio, or overseas Ecuadorian peoples and nationalities. Notably, Martha Susana Toapanta Cuascota is the only candidate qualified for the latter category, a situation that may present legal challenges regarding potential vacancies.
In Haiti, the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) has reported at least nine preliminary presidential aspirants registered on its digital platform. These include figures such as former Prime Minister Claude Joseph and former President Jocelerme Privert. The CEP has extended the deadline for online registration and document submission until October 9, after which the authority will evaluate the legal compliance of all applicants. Additionally, the CEP has undergone leadership changes, with Peterson Pierre-Louis appointed as the new president to oversee the upcoming presidential and congressional elections scheduled for December 13, 2026.
