Haiti signs security pact with UN‑backed anti‑gang force

The Haitian government and the United Nations‑authorized Gang Suppression Force (GSF) signed a memorandum of understanding to coordinate actions against armed gangs operating nationwide.

The agreement, signed by Justice and Public Security Minister Patrick Pélissier and GSF representative Jack Christofides, outlines procedures for handing over detainees, weapons, ammunition and seized equipment to authorities, with particular focus on the most gang‑affected departments. It reaffirms the government's commitment to protect the population and to create conditions for upcoming elections, whose date remains to be set. The GSF will support the National Police and, under a UN Security Council resolution, will gradually transfer security responsibilities to Haitian institutions up to 2028, aiming to restore stability and enable legitimate authorities to assume power.
