Haiti to modernize Antoine Simon International Airport
The National Airport Authority (AAN) has announced a modernization program for the Antoine Simon International Airport in Les Cayes, located in Haiti’s southern department. The project aims to strengthen the airport's regional and international role by upgrading critical infrastructure.
A central component of the plan involves extending and widening the runway from its current dimensions of 1,873 meters by 25 meters to 1,984 meters by 35 meters. This expansion is intended to allow the facility to accommodate larger aircraft with over 100 passengers, whereas current operational constraints limit flights to approximately 30 passengers.
Additional upgrades include the development of dedicated spaces for international travelers to handle customs and migratory formalities, as well as improved fuel supply facilities in collaboration with the company DINASA. The AAN also seeks to enhance security and capacity to support tourism, commercial exchange, and the transport of agricultural goods. These improvements are viewed as vital for regional development, particularly as land travel remains impacted by insecurity on various road axes.
