Haitian goalkeeper Johny Placide retires after World Cup appearance

Haiti’s longtime captain and starting goalkeeper Johny Placide announced his retirement from the national team following the country’s final group‑stage match against Morocco at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 38‑year‑old ends a 15‑year international career that included two World Cups, three Gold Cups and a Copa América, accumulating 83‑84 caps. Haiti were eliminated after losses to Scotland, Brazil and Morocco, finishing last in Group C.

In the wake of the announcement, two low‑profile meme tokens bearing Placide’s name appeared on the Solana and Ethereum blockchains. The Solana‑based $PLACIDE token holds a market cap of roughly $2,000, while the Ethereum version shows even less activity and negligible trading volume. Neither token is linked to the Haitian Football Federation or any major crypto project, and both have attracted virtually no interest from investors.
