Haitian judiciary begins new year amid security and infrastructure challenges

Haiti has commenced the 2026-2027 judicial year, marked by both local preparations and significant systemic warnings. In Jacmel, officials are preparing the Palace of Justice and the Court of First Instance through cleaning and restoration efforts to host the official reopening ceremonies.

However, the Association Professionnelle des Magistrats (APM) has raised alarms regarding the severe challenges facing the national court system. The APM reported that violence from armed groups has caused the closure or dysfunction of numerous courts across the country, threatening the safety of judges, lawyers, and citizens.

Beyond security concerns, the judiciary faces structural hurdles including dilapidated infrastructure, insufficient financial resources, and a lack of modern equipment. The APM is calling on the Haitian government to restore national security and improve working conditions to ensure a more effective and independent justice system.
