Haitian migrants face humanitarian crisis amid mass deportations

Mass deportations of Haitian migrants ordered by the Trump administration are creating a humanitarian crisis in Haiti. Weekly flights arriving at Cap-Haïtien International Airport have returned more than 400 migrants since mid-August, often leaving them without personal belongings, mobile phones, or safe housing.

The surge in deportations follows a June U.S. Supreme Court decision to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS), a move that leaves over 330,000 Haitians vulnerable to removal. This follows the previous closure of the CHNV humanitarian program in March 2025 and the Family Reunification Program in December 2025.

Katia Bonté, coordinator of the Group of Support for Repatriates and Refugees (GARR), reported that individuals are being detained in various locations, including streets and workplaces, before being stripped of their effects and sent to detention centers. The returnees face extreme instability in Haiti, where gang violence and security crises have severely compromised the country's ability to provide support or safe passage for those arriving.
