Haitian migrants lose US Temporary Protected Status

A U.S. Supreme Court ruling allowed the Trump administration to terminate the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians, ending the program that had let an estimated 350,000 Haitian migrants live and work legally in the United States. The termination took effect at midnight on Monday, prompting warnings from advocates such as Nancy Hagans, president of the New York Nurses Association, who urged affected workers to secure documents and finances.

The Department of Homeland Security announced that initial enforcement actions will focus on Ohio, home to about 14,000 Haitian TPS holders, while Florida, with roughly 158,000, faces the greatest concern. Congressional officials expressed divergent views: Rep. Michael Rulli (R‑OH) supported the removals, whereas Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D‑FL) condemned the plan as “unacceptable.” The loss of TPS could disrupt sectors that employ many Haitians, including hospitals, nursing homes, restaurants and hotels, and would remove an estimated $5.9 billion in annual economic contributions, $1.5 billion of which comes from Miami alone.
