Haitian migrants seek refuge in Canada following U.S. TPS termination

Haitian migrants are increasingly attempting to enter Canada following the termination of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program in the United States. The program, which provided legal residency and work authorization to hundreds of thousands of Haitians due to instability in their home country, expired in late July 2026 after the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Trump administration's decision to end it.

Many migrants are seeking asylum in Canada, citing extreme danger in Haiti due to gang control in Port-au-Prince. This movement comes amid political friction between the two nations. U.S. President Donald Trump has criticized Canadian immigration policies on social media, claiming they lack sufficient control and are causing domestic instability.

In response to such criticisms, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand noted that while immigration has contributed to prosperity, the federal government has recently reduced intake targets to ensure stability in housing and public services. Canada has also implemented legislative reforms aimed at strengthening border security and the asylum system.
