Haiti investigates fuel quality following reports of vehicle damage

Haiti's Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MCI) has announced investigations into the quality of petroleum products following widespread reports of fuel-related vehicle damage. Consumers, including motorists and owners of generators, have reported significant engine malfunctions, such as clogged injectors and damaged combustion chambers, allegedly caused by contaminated or substandard fuel.

The Alternative Syndicale pour le Transport Moderne (ASTM) is calling for independent technical analyses and the public release of results. The union is demanding full compensation for victims and the establishment of an official mechanism for documenting economic and material damages caused by supply chain failures.

In a statement signed by Minister James Monazard, the MCI urged consumers to remain calm and exercise prudence, noting that no definitive conclusions can be drawn until scientific and technical analyses are completed. The ministry stated it will conduct inspections within its jurisdiction and may seek assistance from specialized institutions. If non-compliance is confirmed, importers and distributors may face legal measures under existing consumer protection decrees.
