Haiti's anti‑gang force goes operational as UN urges child detainee reforms
United Nations officials in Haiti have warned that a gang member is a child in one out of every two cases and that many are held for up to eight years without trial. The UN called for the release of detained children, registration of those without identity documents, and dignified reintegration. The Institute of Social Welfare and Research (IBESR) has helped roughly one hundred children since 2023 to reunite with family members.
The Haitian Force de Répression des Gangs (FRG) announced it has moved into an operational phase, now able to conduct arrests, use air assets and soon maritime capabilities, and improve intelligence collection. The force works alongside the Haitian National Police in locations such as Tabarre and Delmas.
Human‑rights activist Pierre Espérance reported that kidnappers in Haiti often include police officers, noting a lack of political will to purge the security forces and that victims' families sometimes negotiate directly with abductors.
