Haiwaan movie sees slow box office opening in India

The psychological crime thriller Haiwaan, directed by Priyadarshan, has seen a slow and disappointing start at the Indian box office. Starring Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan, the film marks their first collaboration in 18 years. Despite a large release across approximately 7,224 shows, the film recorded an estimated opening day net collection of ₹3 crore, which is considered weak given its high budget and the star power involved.

Critical and audience reactions have been mixed. Some reviewers praised the intense performances, particularly Akshay Kumar’s portrayal of the menacing antagonist Parshuram and Saif Ali Khan’s restrained performance as a visually impaired protagonist, Shyam. However, other critics and netizens have slammed the film for its lengthy 2-hour and 44-minute runtime, predictable plot, and perceived weaknesses as a remake of the 2016 Malayalam film Oppam.

The film faces significant competition from other successful titles such as Mirzapur The Movie and Hanuman Ansh, which have impacted its occupancy rates and screen availability. Early reports indicate that the film's performance may struggle to gain momentum unless positive word-of-mouth improves its standing over the weekend.
