Haiyang Big Yangko Dance micro-documentary released
A micro-documentary has been released detailing the history and traditions of the Haiyang Big Yangko Dance. Located in Shandong province, the dance has been a central part of local culture for over six centuries.
The tradition originated in 1425 at the Dasong Garrison to celebrate Commander Zhao Tong. It was established by integrating classical music with local folk dance traditions, officially debuting with the unveiling of an imperial gold plaque inscribed with ‘Qiye Yanxiang’.
The dance system is characterized by its ‘Nine Major Roles’ and various supporting performers who portray figures such as mythical characters, opera figures, and animals. The performance is a significant element of the local Spring Festival celebrations in Haiyang.
