Hajduk Split fans spark international outcry with antisemitic chants

Hajduk Split fans, specifically members of the Torcida group, sparked international condemnation following antisemitic and Nazi-related chants during a march to Poljud stadium ahead of a UEFA Conference League match against Ajax Amsterdam. Witnesses and media reported chants including ‘Gazi Židove’ (Kill Jews), ‘Auschwitz’, and ‘Rise, Adolf’, alongside the use of a coffin inscribed with ‘Ajax’ during the procession.

Police in Split have launched a criminal investigation into the incidents, identifying multiple suspects for public incitement to violence and hatred. Authorities have made numerous arrests, including individuals for hate speech and others for possession of prohibited pyrotechnics. During the match itself, flares and pyrotechnics caused a 12-minute interruption.

Croatian President Zoran Milanović and Prime Minister Andrej Plenković both condemned the behavior, describing it as unacceptable. Hajduk Split issued an apology to both Ajax and UEFA for the conduct of their supporters. The incident has drawn significant criticism from international media and the Israeli Embassy in Zagreb, highlighting the severe impact of the extremist rhetoric on the club's reputation and the country's image.
