Hajduk Split’s European Failures and Legend Vilson Džoni’s Tito Meeting Recall Club’s History

Hajduk Split has endured a prolonged period of limited success in European competitions. The club has not won a match in its last eleven European outings, a streak that follows a history of occasional highlights such as a notable run after the 1985 elimination of Torino and a strong 2010/11 season. Critics argue the team has become a “no‑name” brand in Europe despite its storied past.

Former player Vilson Džoni, who featured for Hajduk between 1969 and 1978, remains one of the club’s most celebrated figures. During his tenure he helped win two league titles and five domestic cups, and later transferred to rival Dinamo Zagreb, where he was named the best player in Yugoslavia. Džoni recounted a personal meeting with Yugoslav president Josip Broz Tito at his home in Split, explaining that he never liked Tito because he loved Croatia and its Catholic tradition. He also described how political considerations kept him out of the 1974 World Cup squad, despite his strong performances for the national team.
