Hakainde Hichilema begins second term in Zambia amid shifting US relations

Following his reelection, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has entered a second term with a stated focus on economic growth, job creation, and strengthening communities. During his inauguration, Hichilema emphasized that his first term was dedicated to restoring stability and laying a foundation, whereas his second term will prioritize ensuring progress reaches all citizens, regardless of their political affiliation.

The Trump administration appears to be warming to Hichilema’s government, evidenced by US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Frank Garcia attending the inauguration and meeting with the President. A State Department spokesperson stated that the US remains committed to Zambia’s success and seeks to deepen partnerships with the government and private sector.

However, this diplomatic posture contrasts with concerns raised by Democratic lawmakers in the United States. Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Representative Gregory Meeks have expressed alarm regarding potential democratic backsliding, citing reports of post-election violence, arbitrary arrests, and the need for transparency regarding electoral results and investigations into fatal shootings.
