Hakainde Hichilema leads Zambia election count amid reports of violence

Incumbent Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema is leading the 2026 general election count, positioned for a potential first-round victory. According to the Electoral Commission of Zambia, Hichilema has secured approximately 58.86 percent of the valid votes from 135 of the 226 constituencies counted, while his primary challenger, Brian Mundubile of the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP), trails with roughly 39.28 percent.

The election process has been marked by significant unrest and allegations of irregularities. The European Union observer mission described a six-hour suspension of vote tallying as “disproportionate,” following reports of violence against polling staff and allegations of ballot theft. Additionally, the NRPUP has alleged that armed personnel, believed to be members of the Zambian army, conducted a raid on Mundubile’s home in Lusaka, involving live ammunition and the removal of several individuals.

Reports of violence also include the death of a 57-year-old polling agent near Lusaka on election day, for which nine suspects were arrested. International observers, including the Southern African Development Community (SADC), have noted reports of voter intimidation and violence. Despite these disruptions, the electoral commission stated that the threat to the count has been brought under control.
