Hakainde Hichilema re-elected as Zambia's president

Incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema has been re-elected to a second term in Zambia following the August 13 elections. According to the Electoral Commission, Hichilema secured approximately 60% to 61.4% of the valid votes, defeating his primary challenger, Brian Mundubile, who received roughly 38%.

The election was marked by significant tension and reports of irregularities. Incidents included the arrest of 11 individuals linked to the opposition, reports of ballot theft, and clashes during the counting process. While Mundubile has rejected the results and expressed intent to challenge the outcome in court, Ezra Tembo, president of the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP), has conceded defeat and congratulated Hichilema.

Economically, Hichilema’s second term is expected to focus on continuing the fiscal reforms initiated during his first term, which included managing a sovereign debt default and reducing inflation from 24% to 9%. The administration also aims to secure a new International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme by the end of the year to drive growth and investment.
