Hakainde Hichilema to be inaugurated for second term in Zambia
President Hakainde Hichilema is scheduled to be inaugurated for his second term in office on September 1, 2026, following the August 2026 general elections in Zambia.
Under Article 202, Clause 3 of the Zambian Constitution, the 2027 National Budget must be presented to the National Assembly within 90 days of the presidential swearing-in. This special provision for election years allows the new administration time to transition and form a government before setting spending and revenue priorities.
The upcoming term follows an election marked by various domestic challenges, including high living costs, electricity tariffs, and debates regarding the benefits derived from mining resources. Additionally, concerns were raised regarding the Electoral Commission of Zambia’s handling of the results announcement process following the August 13 vote.
