Turkey and Azerbaijan strengthen strategic ties and address Black Sea security

During a visit to Baku, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Foreign Minister Ceyhun Bayramov to discuss strategic cooperation and regional security. Fidan emphasized the deep-rooted, alliance-level relationship between Turkey and Azerbaijan, noting that defense and security cooperation is expanding through joint exercises and industrial partnerships. The two nations are also working toward a trade target of 15 billion dollars.

A primary focus of the discussions was the Russia-Ukraine war and its impact on the Black Sea. Fidan warned that the expansion of the conflict into the Black Sea is unacceptable and poses a threat to regional security and civilian maritime safety. He noted that Turkey is actively engaging in diplomatic efforts and making proposals to the involved parties to prevent further escalation in the region.

Additionally, Fidan addressed regional stability in the South Caucasus, expressing support for the normalization process between Azerbaijan and Armenia. He also commented on the situation in Iran, stating that Iran's security and stability are vital to the region and calling for a diplomatic resolution to current tensions. Finally, Fidan highlighted the importance of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway as a key component of the Middle Corridor for international connectivity.
