CICA Summit in Baku sees walkout during Israeli President's speech

The 7th Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) summit is being held in Baku, Azerbaijan. The summit, themed ‘A Stronger CICA in Asia, Connectivity, Digitalization and Sustainable Development’, expects to adopt the Baku Declaration and announce Laos as a new member. Azerbaijan's chairmanship of CICA has been approved to continue through 2028.

Diplomatic tensions surfaced during the summit when Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and representatives from over 10 countries, including Pakistan, walked out of the hall as Israeli President Isaac Herzog began his address. Fidan, representing President Erdoğan, criticized Israel's actions in Gaza, stating that CICA members cannot maintain commitment while Israel violates the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people.

On the sidelines, President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan met with President Isaac Herzog of Israel to discuss strategic relations and regional security. Aliyev also held meetings with Vietnamese Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan, focusing on strengthening strategic partnerships in energy and trade, and with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev regarding regional connectivity. Fidan also held discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov regarding the Russia-Ukraine war and maritime safety in the Black Sea.
