Democratic Socialists of America influence grows within Democratic Party

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is experiencing significant growth and internal tension as it seeks to influence the Democratic Party. With over 120,000 members, the organization is increasingly successful in primary elections, with several DSA-backed candidates winning seats in safe Democratic districts.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has addressed the group's rising influence, stating that while he will welcome DSA-backed winners into the Democratic caucus to build a majority, he does not support the organization's core platform items, such as defunding the police, open borders, or abolishing the Senate. He also clarified his position on Medicare for All, noting he is not currently co-sponsoring the legislation.

Internal divisions within the DSA are also surfacing. A Maoist faction known as the Liberation Caucus has criticized Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, claiming she is too Zionist and has retreated from socialist politics, specifically citing her stance on Palestine and her recent comments regarding police abolition. Meanwhile, debates continue within the DSA regarding whether to hold member-wide votes on high-profile endorsements.
