Hakeem Jeffries faces expulsion calls and legal setbacks
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is facing criticism from Republican groups and legal setbacks regarding redistricting efforts. The New York Young Republican Club has formally called for Jeffries to be expelled from the House of Representatives, following his comments labeling the Supreme Court ‘illegitimate’ after recent rulings on race-based gerrymandering.
In Maryland, a circuit court judge blocked a proposed constitutional amendment intended to alter congressional districts. Judge Robert J. Thompson ruled that the amendment could not appear on the November ballot because lawmakers missed statutory deadlines, used misleading language, and violated the state’s single subject rule. The judge stayed the order to allow for an appeal to the Maryland Supreme Court.
