Hakka Affairs Council develops AI platform for language revitalization
The Hakka Affairs Council in Taiwan is developing an AI-driven digital infrastructure to promote the Hakka language and bridge the generational gap. By utilizing generative AI, large language models, and speech recognition, the council aims to integrate Hakka into modern digital life.
Since 2017, the council has been collecting Hakka linguistic corpora, followed by the establishment of a Hakka voice database in 2021. The goal is to create a “Hakka Sovereign AI” that ensures linguistic data and cultural assets remain under local control. This technology is intended to support various applications, including chatbots, smart assistants, digital teaching materials, and interactive games, making the language more accessible to younger generations through social media and mobile platforms.
