Hakkari farmer films 1.5-meter snake in field
In Hakkari, Turkey, a farmer and journalist named Hekim Çiftçi encountered and filmed a 1.5-meter-long snake while working in his field in the Mezra region of the Yukarı Merzan neighborhood. After recording the animal with his mobile phone, Çiftçi ensured the snake was moved away from the area without causing it any harm, using the incident to call for the protection of nature.
Biology professors Dr. Mehmet Zülfi Yıldız from Manisa Celal Bayar University and Dr. Ali Satar from Dicle University identified the species as Hemorrhois ravergieri, commonly known as the 'kocabaş yılan'. Experts clarified that this species is non-venomous and poses no danger to humans. They noted that these snakes play a beneficial role in the ecosystem by controlling pests such as rodents and small reptiles in agricultural areas.
