Hakone Ekiden qualifying race set for October 17

The 103rd Hakone Ekiden qualifying race is scheduled for October 17 in Tachikawa, Tokyo. In this half-marathon competition, up to 12 runners from each school compete, with the top 10 combined times earning a spot in the main event next January.

Yamanashi Gakuin University is predicted to pass through in first place, bolstered by having 10 experienced runners and the presence of Brian Kipiego. Other strong contenders include Chuo Gakuin University and Tokai University. Conversely, Toyo University faces uncertainty as all its participating runners are competing in this qualifying race for the first time under head coach Toshiyuki Sakai.

This year marks the final qualifying race under the current format. Starting from the 104th edition in 2027, the Hakone Ekiden will undergo significant reforms, including increasing the number of participating teams and changing the frequency of commemorative races.
