Halberstadt archaeologists excavate medieval settlement

Archaeologists from the State Office for Heritage Management and Archaeology of Saxony-Anhalt are excavating a significant medieval settlement, known as a 'Wüstung' (abandoned settlement), in Halberstadt, Germany. The site, located at the Frevelgraben within the eastern industrial area, is believed to have been part of the lost village of Kühlingen.

Geophysical measurements conducted prior to the excavations revealed ditch structures and various internal patterns, which were later confirmed by physical digging. Findings include several pit houses, wells, and settlement plots. The evidence suggests the settlement underwent at least two distinct phases of development, with residents shifting their building locations over time.

Mayor Daniel Szarata noted that the archaeological work is being conducted in close coordination with the expansion of the industrial zone to ensure historical preservation while developing a future economic location. The site is considered scientifically significant due to its long history of use as both a settlement and a burial ground.
