Halberstadt organ project reaches 17th sound change

The musical project ‘Organ2/ASLSP’ (As Slow As Possible), a long-term performance of John Cage’s work, has reached its 17th sound change at the St. Burchardi Church in Halberstadt, Germany.

The piece is designed to span 639 years, with a scheduled conclusion on September 4, 2640. The recent transition involved shifting from a seven-tone sequence to an eight-tone sequence by adding the note ‘a’, resulting in a slightly brighter tone that will persist for the next 14 months.

The performance utilizes a specially constructed organ that employs a continuous airflow system and small sandbags on the keys to maintain notes for extended periods. The event attracts international audiences to the historic site in Saxony-Anhalt.
