Halfing municipality pays 10,000 euros for cat's medical treatment

The municipality of Halfing in the Rosenheim district of Bavaria has paid approximately 10,550 euros to cover the veterinary expenses of a cat named Mucki. The animal was discovered stuck in a tilted window for several hours, an incident associated with what medical professionals call ‘tilted window syndrome,’ which can cause severe internal injuries.

Following the rescue, Mucki was treated at a veterinary clinic where doctors diagnosed the cat with epilepsy. While the cat has recovered and is currently living at the Ostermünchen animal shelter, it will require lifelong medication. Under local regulations, municipalities are responsible for the costs associated with found animals.

The incident has highlighted broader issues regarding stray animals in Bavaria. The Ostermünchen animal shelter is currently housing 140 cats, its highest number to date. In response to the pressure on shelters, the Rosenheim district has introduced a new regulation set to take effect in February 2027, which will mandate that cat owners in five municipalities chip, register, and neuter their pets.
