Halitosis causes and management strategies
Halitosis, commonly known as bad breath, can stem from various factors beyond simple poor hygiene. While the accumulation of bacteria, food particles, and cells in the mouth is a primary cause, other contributing factors include dry mouth, gum disease, cavities, infections, and digestive issues.
Maintaining proper oral hygiene is a key preventative measure. Recommended practices include brushing teeth at least twice daily, cleaning the tongue to remove microorganisms, and using dental floss to reach areas a toothbrush cannot. Staying hydrated by drinking sufficient water and moderating tobacco use can also help prevent dry mouth.
Persistent bad breath that remains despite improved hygiene may indicate underlying health concerns. Conditions such as gum disease—often accompanied by bleeding, inflammation, or sensitivity—as well as certain medications or systemic diseases, can cause lasting odor.
