Halkidiki wildfire caused by electrical grid short circuit

An investigation by the Arson Crimes Directorate (DAEE) indicates that a devastating wildfire in Halkidiki, Greece, was caused by a short circuit in the electrical grid. Strong winds reportedly caused a tree to fall onto a power pole, shifting the structure and causing wires to contact one another, which generated sparks that ignited dry vegetation.

Firefighting efforts in the Sivri area have shown signs of improvement, though crews remain on high alert due to the risk of reignition from continued strong winds. The emergency response involves 155 firefighters, 57 vehicles, 9 aircraft, and 7 helicopters. Support includes specialized units from various regions and a contingent of firefighters from Moldova participating in a European pre-deployment program.

Authorities have emphasized the necessity of regular maintenance and vegetation management around power lines to prevent similar incidents. The prosecutor has appointed experts to further investigate the cause, as the fire impacted areas near residential zones and necessitated emergency '112' evacuation alerts.
