Halkidiki wildfire contained but hotspots remain in Siviri FAST-MOVING
A major wildfire in Siviri, Halkidiki, has been brought under control, though authorities remain on high alert for potential flare-ups due to strong winds. The fire, which broke out on Thursday afternoon, has left significant damage to homes, vehicles, and local infrastructure, including the Siviri theater and a biological treatment plant. Initial estimates suggest approximately 4,000 stremma of forest land were burned.
The emergency response involved 227 firefighters, 13 EMODE pedestrian teams, and 57 vehicles, supplemented by 12 firefighters and three vehicles from Moldova. A large-scale evacuation was conducted both by land and sea, with the Coast Guard and private vessels successfully evacuating 481 people to safer locations such as Sani and Thessaloniki.
While the active fire front has subsided, firefighters continue to battle scattered hotspots in difficult-to-reach ravines. Aerial support, including six aircraft and one helicopter, remains active. The road from Kassandra to Foukra remains closed to facilitate emergency operations.
