Halle commemorates synagogue attack anniversary

Commemorations were held in Halle, Germany, to mark the seventh anniversary of the antisemitic attack on a synagogue by a far-right extremist that resulted in two deaths. The memorial included wreath-laying, bell ringing, and a minute of silence, attended by representatives from the church, city, and political figures, including Saxony-Anhalt's Minister President Sven Schulze and his predecessor Reiner Haseloff.

During the event, Hans-Thomas Tillschneider, an AfD member of the state parliament and recently elected Vice President of the new Landtag in Magdeburg, attempted to enter the synagogue grounds. He was blocked by a human chain formed by protesters, including members of the Jewish Students' Union Germany (JSUD), who sought to prevent the far-right party from ‘hijacking’ the memorial.

Police described the protest as a spontaneous assembly. Following mediation by assembly authorities and a period of discussion, Tillschneider eventually left the site. Tillschneider characterized the protesters as a ‘group of fanatical students’ who insulted him, while the JSUD stated their actions were a spontaneous effort to protect the sanctity of the commemoration.
