Hallein abolishes entertainment tax for cultural and sporting events
The municipality of Hallein, Austria, has decided to abolish the entertainment tax for events providing public value. Starting October 1, taxes will no longer apply to concerts, theater performances, cabaret, clubbing, masquerade balls, and various sporting events.
Mayor Alexander Stangassinger stated that the move aims to provide financial relief to clubs and cultural initiatives, describing it as an indirect form of cultural and club promotion. The decision also removes the administrative requirement for organizers to submit and number tickets in advance, replacing it with a requirement for traceable records of ticket numbers and prices. The municipality expects this measure to result in an annual loss of approximately 14,000 euros. The tax will remain in place for purely commercial or tourist-oriented offerings where economic regulation is desired.
