Halliburton projects face calls for environmental re-assessment in Suriname

Residents living near Halliburton projects on Sir Winston Churchillweg have formally requested the National Environmental Authority (NMA) to review previous environmental assessments. The legal challenge targets two specific projects: a planned operational base and the Suriname Halliburton Radioactive Storage Facility.

Stakeholders are contesting how the NMA classified these projects. Specifically, they question the classification of the radioactive storage facility as a low-impact activity with high sensitivity. The residents argue that the current assessments do not sufficiently account for broader social and economic consequences, nor do they provide a complete picture of the potential risks to health and the environment.

In addition to the re-evaluation, the residents have requested a temporary suspension of all activities related to the construction and operation of the operational base until the new assessment is completed. They are also seeking a review of whether the decision to rely solely on an Environmental Management and Monitoring Plan (MMMP) for the storage facility should be revoked or modified.
