Hallie Shoffner faces scrutiny over comments on undocumented workers
Hallie Shoffner, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in Arkansas, is facing criticism following remarks made on the ‘Free Arkansas Podcast’ regarding undocumented immigrant workers. During a discussion on labor shortages and agricultural economics, Shoffner stated, “And honestly, we’d trade five Americans just for one of them because of how hard they work,” referring to illegal migrant workers.
Shoffner, a farmer running against Republican Senator Tom Cotton, argued that the current immigration system is “backlogged, bureaucratic and doesn’t actually help anybody.” She advocated for a pathway to legal work status, noting that these workers are hardworking, spend money locally, and have families in the country.
Senator Cotton’s campaign has seized on the comments. Campaign spokesman James Arnold accused Shoffner of implying she has employed undocumented immigrants and challenged other Democratic congressional candidates to address whether they agree with her assessment of worker value. Shoffner’s campaign manager, Anna-Lee Pittman, responded by claiming the Cotton campaign deliberately stripped context from the conversation.
